We all have so much STUFF. It’s more of a gift to NOT receive a gift for the holidays. It’s a season to spend time with family and friends, and to let them know we care about them.
I’m reminded of the last birthday present my father requested, when he was terminally ill with cancer. What do you give someone who literally doesn’t need anything?
He asked me to have trees planted in his name.
The company sent me a certificate which I presented to him, stating how many trees of what type had been planted and where. He seemed really pleased. I think he liked the idea that the trees would live on long after he was gone.
I received a catalog in the mail about six months ago from another interesting company, Heifer International. You donate a gift amount to provide a goat or sheep to a village in another country that desperately needs it (they have a tree planting option as well).
Get creative and think of ways you can celebrate the holidays without giving items that will add to household clutter. If you know someone really needs a particular item, great. Otherwise, they’d probably love a gift certificate to a restaurant, movie tickets or a donation made in their name. After all, isn’t it “the thought that counts?”
